       Michael Caine always has a sardonic side to his roles, and possibly this is an aspect of his personality as well.  He always seems to know something that we, the audience, don't., making his performances edgy and interesting.    This characteristic along with his sardonic touch show up loud and clear in "The Cider House Rules" and "The Italian Job."  Oddly, Mr. Caine has been harshly criticized by his fellow actors and some non-actors for taking on just about any role that comes his way.  So, the guy likes money - what's the problem?  Even his bad movies ("Blame it on Rio," "Jaws II, the Revenge" ) are worth watching just to see the good stuff he brings to bad movies.
