Bill Russell

Without basketball great, Bill Russell, no one
would have ever heard of my alma mater, the University of San Francisco. After putting the Don's on the
basketball map, in 1956, he was drafted in the first round, second pick overall by the St Louis Hawks, but
didn't remain there. After some fast and furious machinations, Mr. Russell landed with the Boston
Celtics in 1956 where he remained as an outstanding player and later coach for 13 years. He was vothed
NBA champion no less than 11 times. In 2009, the NBA Finals Trophy was renamed in his honor to the Bill
Russell NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award. Bill makes me proud to be a Don.
