Ian Thorpe

       Ian Thorpe was a sensation at age 15 when he won his first world swimming championship in freestyle over the middle distance of 400mts.  He went on to dominate middle distance over the next 8 years before retiring early.  He was clearly the best swimmer of his time over distances from 200mts to 800 mts.   Although not overall as great as other swimmers of the past 100 years, his record and world records prove him to be one of the greats of all time.
