Joe Louis

Joe Louis, The Brown Bomber, nee Joseph Louis
Barrow, was the son of an Alabama sharecropper. He went on, of course to become the first African
American to achieve idol status among American athletes. His championship boxing reign was the longest
of any heavyweight, lasting 12 years from 1937 to 1949. I think we can all agree he wasn't just a great
black boxer, but one of the greatest boxers of all time, period. Louis won all of his first 27 fights,
23 by a knockout. Pretty invincible, no?
