Wayne Gretzky

Wayne Gretzky is unique in any sport. He
has almost double the number of points of any other player in the history of hockey. Where Michael
Jordan or Tiger Woods will surpass their historical counterparts by 5% or 10%, Gretzky nearly doubled those
records.
He holds 61 individual records for most points,
goals, assists, points per game, goals per game, assists per game, playoff points, playoff goals, playoff
assists, points per season, goals per season, assists per season, number of MVP trophies... the list goes
on.
In his record breaking 215 point season (modern
scoring titles are won between 90 and 125 points), he had more goals than every other player in the league
had points (goals + assists). He had more assists than any other player had points. In fact, he nearly
matched the point production of an ENTIRE TEAM from that season (The Colorado Rockies had 241 points for the
entire team that season).
And with him, it wasn't a case of "different
era, different players" like Wilt Chamberlin. He played against the greats of the modern era. He
scored against Patrick Roy and Martin Brodeur in net and faced Chris Chelios and ray Borque and Nicholas
Lidstrom on defense. He took faceoffs against Joe Sakic, Joe Thornton and Jaromir Jagr and still put
together the 14th best season in NHL history.

When a person says "the great one" you
automatically know that they're talking about Gretzky. To me that is saying something.
Gretzky was the most dominant player to ever
put skates on. He will always be the best that there ever was. I would move him to number one if
it was my list.
