Everyone
reads "Lady Chatterley's Lover" to satisfy their racy side. But D. H. Lawrence's story about a lonely
frustrated housewife lusting for her gardener is not your modern day tale of the rich Beverly Hills housewife
having an affair with the pool guy. Lawrence gets into the social culture of the oppression of women in
his time (late 19th-early 20th century) and how they are basically bonded to hearth, home, husband and children
with no way out. His novel "Woman in Love" also explores British society of the time and how women were
treated as chattel once again. His books were considered smutty at the time. Betty Friedan,
Gloria Steinem and all feminists the world over owe a lot to him and his social
conscience.
