Dante was
a master at mixing his opinions of the major politicians of his time with a dramatic narrative. Whether
you agree with his positioning of the characters and their foibles on each of the nine rings of hell, you have
to appreciate his poetic prose and his imagination. He must have a had a thorough knowledge of the
current events of his time and who had the most political clout in the turbulent times of the pre-renaissance
world.
He also
showed great creativity in matching the punishment to the crime wherever his subjects fell on the ladder to
hell. Pure genius putting Judas on the ninth rung (the worst) of hell for betraying a friend and putting
the petit bureaucrats, who he referred to as opportunists on the first.
