Flaubert's writing may seem difficult to get through as it was written in a style not familiar with those of us
who live in modern times. Don't let this stop you though. His thoughts and imagination are well
worth your time. Referring here to Madame Bovary, the subject is a well-to-do but lonely Doctor's
wife who has many affairs and lives beyond her means. This is not a theme stuck in the 19th century of
Flaubert's time, but one that we can all relate to today. Msr. Flaubert's book was considered
obscene at the time it was published, but was later understood to be an excellent example of the Realism school
of literature and lives on today as a classic.
