H. G.
Wells was the man that gave us "The War of the Worlds," "The Island of Dr. Moreau" and "The Time
Machine." All have been made into movies. Wells was a science fiction writer of more books than
mentioned here. Those are the ones I've read. More than a science fiction writer, Wells was a
futurist writer of tremendous imagination. In "The Island of Dr. Moreau" Wells has a genius doctor living
on an island with a bevy of servants he has trained, all are fantastical animals that he is experimenting
on. "The War of the Worlds" was read so convincingly on radio in the late 30's by Orson Welles that
everyone within earshot of the radio show ran for cover. The earth was being invaded by aliens from outer
space and they weren't all that friendly. H. G. Wells himself had an unpopular political viewpoint with
Fabian socialism, which he withdrew from when they didn't measure up to his standards, and thereon was
basically a socialist.. His lack of organized religious beliefs didn't help him win many friends either
in the first half of the twentieth cenury. Now, we can forget all that and enjoy him for the thoroughly
imaginative and creative man that he was and fortunately for us, he wrote books.
