Melville's most famous novel was, of course, Moby Dick where the obsessed whaling captain with one peg leg went
after the perpetrator of the crime, the great white whale what done him in. There is rampant symbolism in
the book, with the great white possibly standing for the irretrievable goal or the captain's worst enemy or
whatever (it's been a while since I read the book). It is a magnificent tale of the sea, the time when
whaling was essential to life, and the characters involved in the great adventure. I know that Melville
also spent a great deal of time in French Polynesia, where he wrote Omoo and Typee - two books I must confess I
haven't read but will soon. Melville is a treasure of American Literature.
