       That T.P. made this list I think says more about the people contributing to the list more than the author himself.  I think in their quest to find something good to read they stumble across a name they've heard and like literary lemurs take the plunge.  Pynchon is a Hemmingway rip-off or a Burroughs wanna-be.  Plots that are like forgetting what your doing in the middle of falling down stairs and character descriptions that drag on for page after page of vulgar langauge with no other purpose than to use coarse words.  I would liken reading Pynchon to watching the movie "Heavy Metal" sans buzz.  I never really read anything like a novel in an altered state but perhaps I'd like him more if I tried.
