Toni
Morrison won a richly deserved Pulitzer Prize for her novel Beloved. As in all of Morrison's tales,
the subject of slavery is never far in the background, but in the case of Beloved it is very much a part of the
story. Besides the fluid writing style and a story told by a great story teller, there is a wry twist to
the plot. A reader will probably surmise that the girl, Beloved, is a ghost or at least from the
spirit world. The ending reveals that this may or may not be true, leaving the reader to decide for
themself.
