       Heidi represents all that is possible when you are a child.  As a native of Southern California, I also found the snow covered alps where the story unfolds was a wonderful contrast to my chronic sunny days.  I longed for snow when I read the book and the pastoral scenes as well.  Heidi was like a foreign land to me way before I set foot on any foreign soil.  This book may have given me my wanderlust.  In any case, it is a must read for every child as it obviously gets the imagination going full throttle.  The character, Heidi, is also very well drawn and lovable without being saccharine like so many fairly tales of children's lore.  I thought that was important even as a small child.
