The Cat in the Hat

Review of The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss

As a teacher
and a mom, I truly have a great appreciation for Dr. Seuss. Among many Dr. Seuss books, The Cat in the Hat is
a great mix of rhyme, repetition, and fun. Dr. Seuss creates many characters that children can relate to, and
he does this in a fun and often funny way. The Cat in the Hat comes to visit 2 children at their home.
Of course, the mother is not home, but a watchful fish acts as the conscience for the children. The Cat in
the Hat makes a mess of the house, and he brings Thing One and Thing Two to the house to create more chaos.
The children are torn-they want to participate, but they know that their mother would not like that sort of
behavior. In the end, the children's morals are tested. The Cat in the Hat cleans up the mess, and the
children are left with one question: will they tell their mother what happened? When I ask the children in my
class the final question of the book, I more often than not, have half that would tell and half that would
not! Overall, The Cat in the Hat is a wonderful book, and it is appropriate for any
age.

With Dr.
Suess' birthday just around the corner I was just thinking about The Cat in the Hat. Its amazing that little
rhyming books as simple as this made such an impact on the world that we are celebrating the author's birthday
without ever knowing him and after he has passed. I think that says a lot about how great his books really
are.
