Franklin D. Roosevelt

American
presidents are interesting characters, perhaps because America is a democracy and our supreme leaders are
elected. Our best leaders have been criticized by the electing public for being philanderers, empire
builders, opportunists and self promoting above all other interests. Interestingly, that has been far from
the case. I am referring here to Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Jack Kennedy. All have
been accused of the above and more. What sets them apart from our mediocre leaders is just that - they have
been strong, courageous leaders in our country's time of need. Franklin Roosevelt, like the other great
leaders of our nation stood up for their principles and for their country even when those priniciples went against
the popular tide. They had the courage of their convictions. I hope we've learned from them. FDR
faced a world war that he was not eager to enter. He led the country through it with grace and determination
even while also leading the country out of the worst economic times they have ever known. So far, his methods
of alleviating those untold economic hardships have been put in place again and again and we haven't experienced
the depths of the 1930's economic woes since.
