Joan of Arc

100 Greatest Historical Figures

Joan of Arc was born in Domremy in eastern France around the year 1412.  At the time of her birth, there was a truce been England and France.  At the same time there was dispute between rival French factions in the French royal family, which would cause England to re-enter the fray. These rival French were the Burgundians and the Orleanists.  Joan of Arc would later declare that the Orleanists were blessed by God and so she was on their side.  England came roaring back to France in 1417 and gradually battled for and won most of northern France and won the heart of the French Burgundian, Phillip the III,  who agreed to recognize England's Henry V as the legal heir to the French throne.  This upset Joan immensely as she deemed  Charles of Pontheiu, house of Valois (Later Charles VII) as the true heir to the French throne.  Joan jointed the army of Charles claiming divine guidance and made her presence well known to the troops.  She was later captured by the Burgundians, sold to the English who burned her at the stake at the age of 19.  This is quite a tale, but interestingly enough, there is enough written about her and enough that sustains the  history at the time of her life, that it seems to be true.
