Karl Marx

100 Greatest Historical Figures

Karl Marx was a philosopher of economics who was very important for showing us why theory doesn't work in reality.  Marx's socialism put simply, was to bring equality to human beings by dividing the necessary resources among them no matter who they were or how much money they had or how capable they were of working.  The unhealthy and disabled would not be penalized under Marxist programs.  There would be no billionaires and no people starving or dying for lack of food or medical care.  In other words, something of an ideal society where everyone benefits.  The flaw in the theory is human behavior.  Human beings are much more motivated by the selfishness as exemplified by Ayn Rand's objectivism than they are by the altruism of the socialism of Karl Marx.  I am not saying that Rand is right and Marx is wrong, only that one philosophy fits human behavior at this point in their evolution better than the other.
