Mahatma Gandhi

It's not easy
to stop a British invasion, but Gandhi did. Mahatma Gandhi began his struggle for civil rights for the Indian
people as a civil rights attorney in South Africa. He moved his act back to India and pushed hard with his
words and deeds to organize peasants, farmers, laborers and other oppressed groups and led them peacefully to
attain economic and humanitarian rights. He promoted the end to poverty, women's rights and the end to the
doctrine of "untouchability." One of his most famous exploits is to form the non-cooperation movement that
opposed Britain's salt tax and helped bring an end to British rule of India. His methods substantially
influenced other great civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela. He really belongs a
notch higher in the rankings of Historical Figures.
