Marco Polo

100 Greatest Historical Figures

Marco Polo was far more than an adventurous explorer, even though in his time,it took a great deal of intestinal fortitude to venture out into the great unknown.  What he brought back from the eastern part of the world to the western and vice versa, expanded commerce, culture, understanding among peoples and gave us the beginning of the world as we now know it.  He was the first sectarian crusader, if you will.  He wasn't fighting for Christianity or any other religious doctrine, he was exploring for himself, his country, and though he probably never had an inkling, for all future mankind as well.  Like Guttenberg, he was a pioneer that gave to the world more than they ever thought possible.
