Martin Luther

Martin Luther
of Germany, born in 1483 was a priest of the only church at the time in Germany, the Catholic church. Luther
was also a professor of theology so his thoughts were not just kept to himself. He should be remembered not
just for laying the seeds of the protestant reformation but for having the guts to stand by his principles even
though they were against the all-powerful Catholic church's tenets. To put his courageous acts in a nutshell,
he was not of the belief that one should buy their way into heaven through "indulgences." This was the
practice of the church at the time who stated that the pathway to heaven is by giving the church some gold.
Luther didn't find this practice to be in keeping with God's will. His theology told him that a true
believer believed that the path to heaven is achieved through God's grace through Jesus Christ, not by paying the
Pope. Ouch! Such heresy! To add to his bravery in breaking away from the church, he
translated the Bible into German instead of Latin making it accessible to the masses. Ouch again.
Of course such a deviant was excommunicated from the Catholic church.
