Napoleon Bonaparte

100 Greatest Historical Figures

Napoleion Bonaparte ruled the French from 1804 to 1815, just a few years after the French revolution threw out the monarch, Louis XIV.  He was born in Corsica of noble Italian parentage in 1769 .  Napoleon is historically significant for many of his deeds, none less important than his Napoleonic Code, still in force today concerning civiil law in just about all countries around  the globe.  He was responsible for leading France into the so-called Napoleonic Wars which gained France a major sphere of influence in Europe.  If you ever feel the need for an in-depth pictorial history of the Napoleonic wars, visit the Palace of Versaille just outside Paris.  The walls are covered with dramatic depictions of war episodes at the time by some of France's leading artists. Napoleon's campaign strategies are the subject of classes in military history and how to strategically manage warfare.  In 1815, The Duke of Wellington and his English troops defeated Napoleon and drove him into exile in St. Helena, where he died in .1821 at the age of 51.
