Queen Elizabeth I

100 Greatest Historical Figures

Elizabeth, daughter of Henry VIII, needless to say had many stepmothers, some of which were beheaded.  It was not easy for a woman of the time to be Ruler of all England even as a royal heir, but she did.  She had a fine political mind and actually cared enough about her country to nurture it and lead it to greatness.  She ascended the throne in 1558, regent of an impoverished nation torn by religious squabbles.  She died in 1604 after making England one of the most powerful and prosperous countries in the world.
