Socrates

100 Greatest Historical Figures

One of the most endearing traits of Socrates to me is his belief that a teacher should teach everyone who shows up, not just the elite citizens of the region.  His teaching in open arenas everywhere in Greece made it possible for the humblest citizen to become educated by the great teacher. As long as they were able to get  to the "classroom" they could hang around and learn from him.  Socrates was primarily an ethicist and what we know of him is from Plato and the plays of Aristophanes.  All accounts of his life must remain somewhat suspect as the only way to disseminate information in those days was word of mouth (hence the plays).  Socrates early life included the military, which may have led to his reputation as a "gadfly."  In other words, someone that goes around poking holes in other's arguments of logic.  He was not loved for this.  Socrates was evenutally put on trial for being a gadfly, something he was pround of and refused to give up.  He was found guilty and sentenced to death by the poison, hemlock.
