Thomas Jefferson

100 Greatest Historical Figures

Thomas Jefferson was above all a believer in liberty for all.  He is largely responsible for what America is to this day - a freedom loving people who sometimes unwisely wish to spread that feeling of liberty to other nations who don't understand it and don't know how to deal with it.  Jefferson would be leading the fight to spread liberty throughout the world no matter what.  Jefferson was born in Virginia in 1743 to a life of privilege.  He was an awkward, tall gangly kind of a boy and man who wrote beautifully but was shy as an orator.   Jefferseon succeeded Benjamin Franklin as minister to France which ired Alexander Hamiliton, Secretary of State.  The feud grew and Jefferson and Hamilton wound up leading two political parties:  The Federalists and the Democratic Republicans.  Jefferson eventually headed the Republicans who were pro-France and believed in states rights rather than a strong central government as the Federalists believed.  Thomas Jefferson went on to become president of the United States, almost on a fluke.
