Charles Chaplin

       Not long ago I saw the film about Charles Chaplin's life starring Robert Downey, Jr. who did an impeccable job portraying the great silent star.  This led me to renting many of his films (all silent, of course) and I was astonished that I never followed Charlie Chaplin before this.  My God, what genius!  I finally found what all the hurrah was about and I don't mean the indignation many professed about his life style, to hell with that.  I did not expect such charm and sweetness in the fellow or his films.  He was far more than a comic and director of comic films.  His movies as well as his life show his depth of soul and incredible talent without uttering a word.  He was right.  Even when the talkies became popular, he stuck with silents.  That's where he really shone, and much brighter than anyone else.  I regret that  I didn't discover him earlier.  I always knew who he was.  I even went to a Halloween party dressed as Charlie and attempted his signature walk.  I didn't know his greatness.
