Fritz Lang

Fritz Lang is
one of the greatest directors of all time. He was dubbed "The Master of Darkness" early on in his
career. An apt appelation for the man who gave us the "Dr. Mabuse "series, "Metropolis " and "M" among many,
many others, some when he worked in Austria and some when he worked in Hollywood. He also wrote most of the
films he directed and produced many of them. Perhaps his most memorable film was "Metropolis" a film of the
expressionist school that concerned the modern world, capitalism and how humans are simply not well adjusted to
such a world (or shouldn't be). Several of his films concerned the plight of the human being in
society. "M" starring a Lang favorite, Peter Lorre, is about a man, a serial killer, who did his time
and is now free, and how the community reacts to him and a rumor that sprang from nowhere that this man is a
pedophile. He was tried in a Kangaroo court for that alleged offense. The film ends with his court
trial. You don't know what the verdict or the sentence was. The film is about mob
hysteria.
