Sergio Leone

Sergio Leone is known foremost as the King of the Spaghetti Western.  That's okay.  It's good to be king of something and Mr. Leone certainly brought the so called "Spaghetti Western" to the  movie going public.   A typical film of his would include Clint Eastwood, Jack Elam and Lee Van Cleef in the cast.  All very interesting actors with which director Leone managed to get a distinctive ambience in his films with his distinctive directing style and scenery evoking the Amerian West in its cowboy days.  The movies themselves, with their muted earth  tones and  pronounced talian musical backgrounds, created  their own niche and genre.  Let us not forget  that Sergio Leone also directed that very non-spaghetti western tale about America's past,  "Once Upon a Time in America" concerning early jewish immigrants to America who became vicious, greedy mobsters from thevantage point  of one of the gangsters (Robert De Niro) thirty years later.

I love Leone's romantic vision of the west. Rarely do we see such powerful characters going head to head as Blondie andn Angel Eyes. There inhumanly fast reflexes and accuracy are frightening and spectacular. When I watch Leone's movies I feel as if the camera crew went into the past to film it.
