On the
Waterfront takes place along the docks of New Jersey and concerns the lives of working class people. The
movie, directed with a sure hand by Elia Kazan, is about mob violence and corruption within the Longshoreman's
Union. With a cast including Marlon Brando, Eva Marie Saint, Rod Steiger and Lee J. Cobb all directed by
Kazan, the movie could hardly go wrong. However, it did much better than that. It will remain a classic
for its milieu, made better by the black and white cinematography, and its subject matter involving ordinary people
with the strength, courage and determination to set right what is wrong and unjust. They do all this and
still dream. Marlon Brando's line "I could have been a contender" may be one of most repeated lines in
cinematic history. Bravo to everyone who had a hand in this film.
