What a movie
it is. "Cuckoos Nest" swept the Oscars in 1975 and deservedly so. "One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest" is a
film version of Ken Kesey's novel of the same name. The film is very faithful to the book, which is good
because the book couldn't be improved upon. The action takes place in a state mental hospital in Salem,
Oregon (Oregon being Kesey's home state). It tells the tale of a many-time petty criminal (Jack Nicholson)
who is sent to the mental institution for evaluation after a charge of rape. Here he meets up with the
diabolical Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher). From the beginning of his stay, there is much friction between
criminal and nurse. She needs to assert authority over her subjects (the patients) and he hates
authority. The cast, except for Nicholson, Fletcher and Danny DeVito are unknowns. A standout character
is the 6'7" Indian Chief Bromden played expertly by Will Sampson. After many cat and mouse games involving
Nurse Ratched vs the patients led by Jack (Randall Patrick McMurphy), Nurse Ratched get her final last laugh by
authorizing prefrontal lobotomy surgery on McMurphy. Chief Bromden is so horrified that his friend is not
what he used to be, he suffocates him with a pillow, throws a hydrotherapy machine through the window of the ward
and escapes.
