Black
Sabbath, along with Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, defined the
sound of Heavy Metal in its first form in the early 70s. To
this day, they still continue to be a prime influence on the
influx of underground and mainstream metal bands that are
making up this vast musical movement. Their willingness to
tackle such dark subject matter the way they did back in their
day immediatly set them apart from the more "flower-power"
groups that where more popular at the time. One of the most
famous (or more acurately "infamous") rock icons of all time
made his mark on the band's earlier material, and later went on
to establish a very successful solo career of his own. One of
the most important contributions of the group, however, was the
guitar playing of Tony Iomi. His sludgy doomy riffs, burried
behind walls of distortion helped pave the way for many more
metal guitarists to come.
