       Eminem or Marshall Mathers or Slim Shady is a white rapper.  Not only a white rapper but one that can do way more than hold his in own in a traditionally black musical genre.  I have never seen him in concert but I, like millions of others have listened to his albums and had the pleasure of seeing him act (probably as himself) in the film 8 Mile titled after the street in the gritty Detroit neighborhood of his youth.  The song Lose Yourself from that movie went on to become the longest running hit in rap music history.  Of course, Eminem also wrote that song as he does all of his songs.  As in the movie, Marshall Mathers went into music to escape his disturbing life in the streets of Detroit.  Dr. Dre was undoubtedly his major influence.  The man has a remarkable way with words whether you are into rap or not.  For those not into rap, think of  Eminem as a poet and really, really listen to what he has to say as well as how he says it.  You just might think about rap and hip hop in a different and more respectiful way.  Mr. Mathers is truly a breakthrough artist.
