Muddy Waters
and the blues are virtually the same entity, particularly the Chicago blues sound. Muddy and the song
"Hoochie Coochie Man" are inseparable. In his 40+ year career, Muddy performed with Howlin Wolf, Bo Diddly,
Steve Winwood and Johnny Winter among the more well-known names. He kept disappearing from the music scene
and making comebacks in 1967 with Bo Diddley and then again in 1977 with Johnny Winter. After the 1977
comeback, he didn't need to do that any more and stayed on top of the blues scene until his death in 1983 at age
70. His influence can be heard directly in such mega-pop stars as Chuck Berry, the Rolling Stones, Jimi
Hendrix and The Allman Brothers Band.
Not bad for a
guy who got his name by playing in the Mississippi mud as a kid.
