Best 100 Musicians of all time list

While I would wholeheartedly agree with the notion that The Beatles are the greatest musicians of all time if the list were 'the best 100 POP musicians of all time". After all, The Beatles were extremely influential, insanely popular, and more than half of our modern musicians wouldn't exist if it weren't for their brilliant work. Unfortunately, given the name of the list, "Best 100 Musicians of ALL TIME" it is clear that The Beatles wouldn't even be on the Top 100. Anyone who thinks The Beatles are better than Mozart should be drug out into the street and shot in the back of the head in front of their loved ones. U2 better than Handel? What the hell is going on here? Not a single modern band would make it anywhere near the top 100 or even 200!

Best 100 Musicians of all time list

Well, what an honor. The first to post a review of arguably the best rock, best selling, most influential singing group of all time... the incredible, edible Beatles!

The internal dynamics of the group are / were as interesting as the external hoopla and flash that constantly did / does surround them in both life and death.  The extreme polar personalities that electrified the group were as diverse as Paul McCartney and John Lennon, and each complemented the other in adding and subtracting from the music what the other one lacked or overflowed in.  Certainly if not the simple, genius lyrics of the early songs were not enough to place them at the top of the list, the eclipsing, perfect harmonies of four british male voices and the astounding productions and engineering values added by George Martin coupled with a perfected ease of musicianship and mastering of the instruments by the Beatles would probably have pushed them to the top alone.

Indeed, the early songs are too readily often dismissed as too simple, too easy, too pop and not deep enough for our evolved culture.  Statements by famous magazines that basically underline that type of thinking shock and dismay me, as they have missed the very definition of just what genius is.  Genius is not genius perhaps, if it does not make one pull back from the finished work and stare in disbelief as one exclaims without thinking...."Of course....why didn't someone think of / write / say / play that sooner?"

An example of this might be the wheel, for example.  The wheel is simple, seemingly required little thought, very logical in its design...yet someone invented it...and everyone since then has been exclaiming, "Of course! "  But yet, you do not find magazines discounting the value of the first wheel because of the lack of sophistication.  You don't find magazines touting the latest auto tire as the greatest wheel of all time, simply because of the time and effort and money the complex string molecular structure of the "new" tire took to birth it.  No, we applaud and acknowledge the original wheel as brilliant, stunning, world-changing, simple, the marking of a new era, etc.

So too the Beatles early work. And history and record sales back up that notion.  The Beatlesmania that came with them from England has yet to be overshadowed or outdone...especially by any recent musicians or groups...who have yet to it seems even define themselves in type and style.  The later works of the Beatles are indeed notable and remarkable also...but I beg to differ in importance of some music experts in the profession as to the later versus earlier works of the Beatles.  Seargent Pepper was indeed different, and it took a remarkable amount of production and money to bring to pass, but was not as influential or as world changing as the original simple upbeat cheery music that took all of the world by storm.

       The Beatles. Nuff said.
