Absalom, Absalom!
by William Faulkner
Review of Absalom, Absalom! by William Faulkner

This novel is a difficult read, but also a
worthwhile one. As in all Faulkner novels, the plot is disjointed and hard to follow, but I was
rewarded tremendously for persevering. The plot is set in Mississippi and revolves around the obsessive
and unemotional character of Thomas Supten and his family in the years before, during and after the civil
war. His complete lack of empathy for everyone except himself and his grand ideas causes unbelievable
turmoil and tragedy to all, including Sutpen himself. The story unfolds slowly and teasingly, mostly in
flashback form, and is unveiled through the eyes of different people. Quentin Compson, a recurring
character in Faulkner novels, is the modern-day person learning the story who also has an active role in the
tragic conclusion. Absalom, Absalom! is a fantastic novel.

You know William Faulkner is famous for
his story lines. You cannot predict what will happen at the bottom of the page however in the book
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen it's simple to guess the end of the story. If you read a book from
William Faulkner, you won't forget him.
