For Whom the Bell Tolls is typical
Hemingway. Magnificent. The characters, including the women, are tough and the conditions of the
Spanish Civil War are brutal, but the human elements of the novel are what sets it apart from other war
novels. The lead character, an American, is a loner performing a lonely job, but has found love with a
with a beautiful spaniard who is trying to recover from a vicious attack. The love story between the
two is unique and well crafted, and this in the middle of constant distrust and suspicion between the
American and his supposed Spanish allies makes for a superior read and leads to an incredible climax.
Hemingway's ability to say so much in so few words is on full display in this excellent novel.

A very good book... one that you find yourself
thinking about for many days after you've finished.

An occasionally tedious novel, but has many
wonderful sections and especially in the last 100 pages. Hemingway mixes romance and war beautifully, and the
thoughtful ending is very well written.

As all Hemingway books it is really static and
seems to never get moving. At around page 300 out of 500 the book just starts moving with a constant growing
climax till the end. Till page 499 I probably would have said: what a boring book. Once you read the last
page, close the book and put it down you actually think: "what a f*cking amazing book" and you realize you've
just read a masterpiece which is beauty consists of the whole book, and not only single episodes. READ
IT!

This was a great read. The plot was engaging
and suspenseful. The charactes were complex and easy to relate to. The book presented interesting insights
into Spanish culture, humanity in general, and life itself. Not only that, it is a great historical war novel
and in my opinion the author's best work.
