The Harry Potter books are AWESOME!!!! Anyone who thinks they are rubbish needs to read them a bit more thoroughly and see it in everyone elses point of veiw. If you are sitting at home right now thinking you cannot be bothered to even pick the books up think again! Atleast try and turn the pages full of laughter, unhappiness, tears and  terrifing moments. Just try it! I can assure you that you shall enjoy it the whole way through.

I started to read the potter books when I was about four when my grandma bought me harry potter and the philosophers stone as she knew I loved books. As I started to read I could not put it down and after I had gone to Hogwarts on the school train I was to be seen bumping off the walls as i was reading the thrilling tale. After that every birthday and christmas, I owned more and more potter books until finally I had read the whole collection and desired there to be more books. As there were no more I contented myself by reading them over and over again. My favourite by far was the book Harry Potter and the order of the pheonix mainly because of the DA {Dumbledores Army / Defence Acsociation} and them fighting against the evil Professor Umbridge and the Inquisitorial squad. If ever there was a better book than these i`ll eat my hat if I can find one while I am stuck in the world of fiction that is.

I also cannot wait until the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows dvd is out as I wish to compare it to the book and see what is different between the two things.

       Remember they are AWESOME!

Although i thought the concept of the series and the world she created was nice, the Harry Potter series does not deserve to be this high. JK Rowling does now write well at all. The whole series is just brain candy/ It's for enjoyment.

Yes, people value books at how much they enjoy it, but when it comes to literature, the Harry Potter series is a disgrace to the literature world. Like twilight, Harry Potter gives another view of the mystical creatures we grew up to love, but it is also very plot-driven. There are not many symbols, underlying themes, and not very deep character development. No, the history of a character is not character development. Other than the three main characters, where do we see character development?

As I say again, the Harry Potter series does not deserve to be in a place this high (or even in the top 50, to be honest), and that the reason why it has become a global phenomenon is because it's a book that appeals to all ages (a five year old can read the series!!!). Apparently our society has digressed so badly that the simplicity of JK ROwling's writing has become literary genius. C'MON PEOPLE!!!!!! THIS IS A DISGRACE, WITH TWILIGHT, AND AN INSULT TO THE LITERARY UNIVERSE!

If you're a victim of the education system and want to read and enjoy "literary genius", then read it. however, if you want to read true literary genius, i suggest you read the books that are higher on this list and some books lower on the lists.

This book should NOT be this high on this list!

OMG! why on earth is Harry Potter not no.1? when I was eight years old, my mum told me to read a book instead of watching tv all day.and i am so glad she did! i picked up my sisters copy of the Philosophers Stone, read a couple of pages, complained about how boring reading was, and said if i had read any more pages i would of fallen asleep. Then, at the beggining of January 2010 i wanted to set myself a challenge. i decided i would read the entire Harry Potter series.I am sooooooooooo glad i set myself that challenge. infact it wasnt even a challenge at all. It was the best journey i had gone through in my entire life! J.K Rowlings storys enchanted my mind. How someone could of though of a story like that i have absoloutley nooo idea! There isnt a day that goes by when i dont read/watch/think about Harry Potter. The pain i suffered when i finished The Deathley Hallows was unbearable! J.K Rowling is my absoloute hero! There never has or will be a better book series than Harry Potter. All those Harry Potter haters or even those who simply havent read the books, you have no idea what your missing! Thank you for changing my life J.K Rowling!

A good novel such as this should have been on a higher is not just for kids but for everyone...very well written as if, while reading it, i am at Hogwarts myself...and to everyone criticizing the novel, you have no good taste for good books...HARRY POTTER FOREVER.

The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling is one of the greatest series of books of all time. They have sold 400 Million Copies and have been translated into 69 languages, sold in over 200 countries, plus they have become the highest grossing movie franchise in history, and they even have a Harry Potter theme park! Another record is that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (the last book in the series) is the fastest selling book of all time, 15 million copies in 24 hours. As you can see, Harry Potter is very successfull. Yet another fascinating fact is that J.K. Rowling, the author, is the first ever author to make a Billion dollars. Impresive. For you haters out there, you have no idea how amazing this series is.

I have never been too interested in the Harry Potter series. I tend to be skeptical of many things that receive an excessive amount of hype, and the previews for the movies seemed mediocre and aimed at children. Because our son is getting a little older we finally decided to rent the movies this summer, and while the movies were good, the story intrigued me to read the books and they blew me away.

I can't for the life of me understand the people who are upset that this series is on the list. From what I can tell, they must either be people who have never given it a chance (as I used to be) or people who see themselves are superior and that only their tastes (ie: tortured, dark, blatently philisophical) are worthy of the list. now, I am not one to criticize good literature, I am a fan of philisophical, dark, morally grey literature; books that make you think. However, at the same time I don't think that can be considered "the" criteria of an amazing novel, as some posters here would have people believe.

J.K Rowling's universe pulls you in. It is a different kind of storytelling. It is so detailed and beautifully imagined that the reader feels absolutely immersed in the world. The range of emotions felt by the reader is epic. The series is funny, heartwarming, uplifting, and at times dark, mysterious, and filled with pain. Rather than focusing on some great love story at it's center, as sooo many others do, the Harry Potter series has friendship as its center. While many people criticize it for being midless storytelling or something along those lines, it actually does deal with a large amount of themes throughout its span; addressing the importance of love and friendship (that being the defining difference between Harry and Riddle/Voldemort); family; racism and prejudice; empowerment of children and free thinking; the cyclic nature of life; loss and bereavement; and a suprising amount of attention on death. The theme of death was addressed both from a loss perspective as well as in facing one's death. Rowling wrote this beautifully, expressing the thoughts and fears Harry experienced once confronted with his own death, his desires and fixation concerning his parents death, and his emotions and rections to the loss of friends, or the thought of losing others. The theme of death was handled in a non religious way, yet still spiritually. Life was sanctified,as it was emphasized that even with the "resurrection stone", the dead cannot be brought back.
I could go on... but I have realized how long this is getting.

Put plainly, even without a deep look into the themes and philosophical qualities that aren't as blatenly discussed as most books on the list, the Harry potter series is at its core an amazing story; an amazing piece of literature, written beautifully by Rowling. That alone is enough for it to make this list.
In my opinion it should switch places with Lord of the Rings.

I really think that 16 is an insult to J.K Rowling. I think the Harry Potter series should have at least made the top 10 and possibly the top 5. It's beautifully written and keeps you wanting more. I've read each Harry Potter book at least 20 times, and i recommend it to anyone wishing to read one of the best books EVER.

The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling was reviewed by SiriusBlack

Some people believe these books are not deep, that they don't make you think.  I disagree.  These books question the dangers of desire and greed.  They show the importance of humility, even when you are especially gifted.  And they show the terror of tyranny and our need to maintain control over our lives.  Not only do the books make their readers think (remember the target audience here... these aren't meant for adults, actually), but the imagination that J.K. Rowling possesses and her ability to create this whole world is astounding.  The detail she goes into, from every potion and spell name to the rules of Quidditch to the whole concept of horcruxes, is unbelievable.  Rowling encompasses every reader into this world in such a way that it is hard to decipher where the book ends and reality starts.  One finds themself referring to friends and family as Muggles, and filling out transfer papers to attend Hogwarts themselves.  The mystery and suspense keep the reader turning the pages.  It may not be a tragic love story, it may not be written in 1800 in Old English, but for this generation, it is definitely a book worthy of this list.

The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling was reviewed by KJ

Although they are fantastic (in more than one way) stories, looking beyond the superficial hype and ''Pottermania'' they are actually reasonably poorly written and have little literary merit. Rowling is an amazing storyteller but not a novellist and it is for this reason that this series should not be counted as one of the best *novels* of all time.

Many people object to the harry potter series being on the top 100, but i believe that it has the right to be so, if the standards include entertainment value, character development and how good the plots are. some people always look for depth or philosophical values to judge a book's worth but one must remember that not all people are philosophical, and definitely not everyone wants to parade how intelligent they seem to be by the kinds of books they read. Harry Potter series creates a magical and realistic world that has good foundation and involves its readers down to the smallest details. The characters are memorable, and NO, this is not a philosophical book and NOT written to be anything of the kind, so do not trash it for its 'lack of depth' philosophy-wise.

They should have been higher than 16.The way J K Rowling has created this whole new amazing, magnificent world has never been done by anyone else.A whole secret magical world surrounding the non-magical people like us(muggles) has to be one of the best ideas ever!!!And then to evolve that idea into THOSE BOOKS is pure genius!!She created a whole new world!!It requires a VAST amount of imagination to come up with ALL OF THAT-from the tiniest of things like pygmy puffs, polyjuice potions, flying broomsticks, night busses, owls that deliver mail and number of spells to the big stuff like the concept of a whole school that teaches magic(Hogwarts),a basilisk and Quidditch and Voldemort and loads of other things I could go on forever. That is so much creativity!I am in awe of J K Rowling.I doubt there is anyone else on this earth, dead or alive, who has that much inspiration and inventiveness. And also the characters are some of the best ever. You could totally relate to them which surprises me.Harry Potter is such a good role model to look up to,athough he is'nt real, but still! And others as well like Dumbledore and Hermoine and Ron.I can't pick my favorite, they are all brilliant.

The books are certainly big, huge,MASSIVE on entertainment.I have read each of them about five times but they never get boring. There are simply  too many  extraordinary and spectacular  things in them and everytime you read the books you always discover something new.

And when some people say that the books lack depth it really confuses me.The Harry Potter books are not just about spells and dragons. If your a kid then maybe they are.But if your not a kid then they are bound to get thinking about stuff like facing your destiny and being loyal to yourself and others no matter what, and having enough courage to stand up for what you believe in.I think thats pretty deep.

This must be a joke! It's a joke right? It has to be. The Harry potter series in the top 100 novels.... OF ALL TIME!!!!?????? Just because of that I do not take any of this site seriously. Just because a book was publicized well and sold an ungodly amount of copies does not mean that it was artistically sound or worth being even in the same sentance as such admirable works as "The Grapes of Wrath", "War and Peace", and "Les Miserables". This hurts my soul deep down in side to see this sacrilege.

I watched the first three movies of the series in my childhood and just liked them. Then one day I saw the book on desk of one of my friends in college and just turned the pages and it ended me reading the whole series in two months. I couldnot stop reading until the last page of the last book of the series. I love the whole scenerio and story of the book. I like the whole concept of the magical world and dream of being with Harry, Hermione and Ron in their journey of fighting evil. I read the chapters forest again of the deadly hallows over and over and it inspired me a lot in my life. This book is the best book till now and I am excited to read other books of J.K.Rowling.

I cannot believe these books are on this list! They beat 'Slaughter-House Five', 'Fahrenheit 451', 'A Clockwork Orange', even 'The Count of Monte Cristo'(my favorite book of all time). They even beat 'Atlas Shrugged'(which I'm currently reading). I'm only a few pages into that and it's deeper than Harry Potter. I started the series when I was younger and I did finish it because I wanted to know how it ended. It was a good read, I will say that. They do not deserve to be this high on the list, if at all. It was placed there because of sales... that's it.

This is tough,I liked them, but I don't  think they should be in the top 100. They are page turners. Don't get me wrong they are very good at that. It's just they lack depth. They don't make you think. Thats not to say there isn't any depth, but if you reead some of the great novels of the past century, 1984, Brave new world, catch-22 etc and then the Harry Potter series straight afterwards they leave you feeling very empty. Harry Potter is a book that got alot of people reading which is great and probably deserves to be on this list just for that, but to say the books are in the same league as the greatest novels of all time is an insult to those novels. Don't try make this serious more than it was, it had an ok story, perhaps a little cliche. Written simpily always trying to get you to read the next page. And with a good overall effect. But not even in the same league as the great novels of all time.

When i first heard of the Harry Potter series i thought it was meant for kids....who liked magic and all that stuff...but one fine day when i was getting hell bored..i picked up my sister's novel..'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's stone' i read the first chapter i was THRILLED!!!!i was eager to know what was the plot all about....the suspense....the anticipation....WWOOOO!!  i ended up finishing all the parts...

I salute J.K Rowling for making such an intersting and adventerous books....the end was breath taking....and so unpredictable....people compare The Harry Potter series with  The Twilight series...and i seriously feel that The Twilight series is no where close to the Harry Potter series ....the Harry Potter serious totally ROCKS!!!!

And in the end i'd like to say that please stop making Harry Potter movies....they ruin the whole story and usually they cut the most interesting scenes of the novel!!!!their a disgrace to the novel.

These books are truly amazing. Those self styled connoisseurs who find these books childish and for teens only should climb down from their pedestals and read these books with an open mind at least once.Treating this entire series as one book is wrong though as some books are not as good as the others (Order of the Phoenix, i am looking at you).Yet this series certainly deserves its place in the top 100 list at #16 if not higher.People should realise that with time, tastes change.Books having prose like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle or Fitzgerald wont click with the audience as reading interest has dwindled rapidly since the advent of television and people dont like books where they have to read every sentence at least twice to make any sense of it.In this regard Harry Potter has struck the perfect balance by being too scholarly and yet retaining a certain amount of class. The highly ingenious depiction of the magic world and its dynamics with the real/muggle world also deserves praise.

This book is like The Dark Knight  of novels.Old critics and pedagogues might cling with godfather and citizen kane and casablanca, but the truth is those movies were masterpeices of their time, while TDK is the masterpeice of the 21st century.Iam sure 50 years from now critics will be lauding harry potter as the greatest book series of all time while some new kid on the block will be gathering everyone's attention.

What can I say about these books??These are just fantastic....Its because of J.K.Rowling that I started reading novels and discovered a new world of fantasies and peace.I am 21 now and still I enjoy reading the parts 6 and 7 which were really excellent in all ways possoble. There are many who criticize these novels for being far from reality, but a good novel is that which a reader likes to keep close when he/she is feeling lonely and this is where Harry Potter became my best friend.I was feeling very lonely after leaving my house for the first time for studying Enginering,I was new to the place and the first few days were very lonely.Thats when I got Harry Potter and realized the true value of friends and became more social...I feel its in its right place on the list and those who don't agree, open up ur mind and read these novels once again,i'm sure u'll really appreciate the works of J.K.Rowling.

Honestly and truely these were the first books i fell in love with. Before Harry Potter i didnt like to read...i would glance at a book like once a year..maybe. After finally giving in and reading the series my mind has opened to so much wonder to the the nature of human beings, the current of good vs. evil, the magic that can come from a single book. I went from not thinking about books at all to reading nonstop... now reading to me is like's a necessity. I started reading the series when i was seventeen and now five years later I've read more books than i could ever have imagined. It opened my mind to not only science fiction but to Shakespeare, Austen, Bronte, Tolkein,  Lee, Fitzgerald, even Nabokov. So many Authors willing to let you into their head and their thinking. So many worlds have opened their arms and embraced me but nothing compares to the magic and wonder the Harry Potter series have. If not for Rowling i may never have found that. I strongly recommend this series to people of all ages.

I completely disagree that its a book meant only for children.Harry potter series in one of the fantastic story i have ever read. All scenes and characters are plotted so well and perfectly. While reading the book you can actually imagine yourself watching the scene instead of just reading it. Especially the last two books of the series are simply superb. Before reading it i could have never imagined that such an awsome world may exist, with a number of different creatures having different rules and assumptions.I am a Harry Potter fan and loves all its books and movies.I never get bored reading it.
Although,it involves magic but one can learn alot from it if he/she really wants to.Above all aspects, this series enterains you perfectly.I must say J.K Rowling has done a very good job

Anyone who says this series has no merit obviously doesn't have the mental capabilities to look beneath the surface of a story. Just because children love these stories doesn't mean it doesn't have very adult themes. I am a college student and have written three papers on the different themes and lessons found in these books and I wasn't even able to skim the surface on all that can be found and discussed. You can't just take them at face value. I love many of the books on this list, but even classics listed on here don't have the depth and meaning you can find in the Harry Potter series. Also she didn't just come up with a bunch of crap and throw it on the page to make a children's fantasy story. There is a lot of mythology that she obviously thoroughly researched and also wonderful things she came up with on her own that I haven't seen any other author come close to matching in quite some time, if rarely at all.

The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling was reviewed by Love

i have read some of the books but i found them quite childish, without any sense. even this is not worth to be childish, the best and the most important part of being a child book is that the book should teach a lesson while intertaining. im afraid that this series gives no lesson to the chidren whatsoever----a complete waste of the time to read it.

second and more imprtant thing for being a child book is that the book should indulge bravery in the children. when i read the book i felt myself small against the great harry who has magical powers and all. i felt that i am nothing to do anything for good, only harry could do that as he has the powers. unlike when you read the characters like frodo of the lord of the rings you feel yourself uplifted than that character. you feel that if such a small person who has no powers and is weak, if he can change his world, why cant i. this should be the feeling that a novel should induce in the children which the harry potter series has failed to do

thirdly and lastly i would say that rowling has just added things like trolls and goblins and others, trying to be like LOTR but sometimes there was no need or logic of that thing in there. she has just added the things to make it look more interesting no matter it fits in the plot or not, looks logical or not.

the good thing is that the book does has great magic things like potions and broomsticks and wands and moving pictures and other magical things though that were inroduced much earlier but she has taken them to mastery that can take you to the world of magic condition is that you to just close your eyes and enjoy rhe ride not thinking about the plot

Ok to the people that are saying that this doesnt deserve to be on a top 100 list, I couldnt disagree more. I love these books and surprise, surprise theyre actually readable (Unlike so many of the books on this list). I think books that people actually enjoy, should be on the best novels of all time list. And to you, who must be an 11th grade English lit teacher. Go read Moby Dick and have a blast with your Masterpiece. But as for me, I am going to read things that are great. I think the Harry Potter series is amazing. This series got an entire generation of children to start reading and I guarantee that there is no way 1984 could ever do that. I read this entire series when I was pregnant with my first child. The entire way through I could not stop thinking about how great it will be when my child is old enough so that we can read these books together. I love Harry Potter. This series is ranked way to low at 16 it should be number one. Take that 1984.

So the Harry Potter series by J.K Rowling placed number 16 on the top 100 best novels of all time list....why? like all of you i read and loved all the books, fell in love with the characters and places, was almost as if i knew them personaly but the fact is this series of book most certainly does not belong on the top 100 list. As someone before me posted they are a treat, "mind candy" if you would. In my opinion, which in reality holds no real value except to myself, for a book to be on the top 100 list has to have meaning, a theme in the most basic sense if you will, it thas to make you think. These books are really really good if youk are looking for something to escape into but the fact is folks, there is many many other books with way higher value than Harry Potter sorry to say. And as a side note i noticed there was only one novel of stephen kings on here....pretty sad. if there is one series that deserves to be on here more than the Harry Potter series its the dark tower saga. If any of you so called novel experts claim to be what you are than go and read that series than tell me that Harry Potter still deserves to be on there. sorry if i offended any of you Hogwarts lovers agian just my opinion.

These books are definitely amongst the best children's books. Amongst the best contemporary books. But amongst the best books of all time? I'm not so sure.

They, like the works of Dan Brown, have a compulsive readability about them. But they have the intelligence and literary depth of a mackerel in custard (or that analogy, for that matter). Compared with other fantasy works, it has none of the raw creativity of Lord of the Rings, none of the character development and philosophy of the Earthsea Quartet, and none of the subtle layers of meaning of the Chronicles of Narnia and His Dark Materials.

So, all in all, as books they are brilliant. They will be timeless. But there are other books that should get so much more appraise than this series, for example the Series of Unfortunate Adventures by Lemony Snicket, a books series written around the same time for the same audience, with such wit, brilliance and intelligence it pains me to see that it isn't on this list but Harry Potter and the Da Vinci Code are

These books are the best books i have read so far, particularly the seventh one which is amazing. I read these books again and again and also like to watch their movies.

They are not just meant for the children but also for adults and as far as the depth is concerned they have enough of every kind but the most important thing is that you will enjoy the books and feel sad for the fact that there won't be any HP 8 in the near future. They should have been ranked higher. Thanks J.K Rowling, You are the Best.

I read and loved all the books. Jk Rowling does an amazing job on making the characters seem so real and the places too. This series is the only books I've read start to finish multiple times without geting bored. These books do have depth, I think they have more depth then some. Rowling makes it so you love the characters, good or bad, and when some die you may be sad or happy. These books made me laugh and cry. If you have just seen the movies then you have not even seen the tip of the story. You really really have to read these books they ROCK!

Hmmm... writing a review for these novels by Rowling fascinates me very much, but i'll make one point clear to the guys who criticise the books, first. Literature, customs, culture and tradition, civilization, etc are words used in relative sense. You cant call a book low standard one just because its very interesting and lovable to all. Its wrong to feel that only BOOKS WITH A SHOWOFF AS IF THEY ARE GREAT are the ones to be rewarded. The issue is as simple as it is. Books are for us, not for something supernatural, which juges their depths.

I know that any guy with simple wits can easily declare that he/she loves the books very much, thats something which decides where the series should be placed. I feel sad to say that there are some books in this list which deserve the place, most of them aren't really great enough. I myself read 16 books in the top 20 list, which dont even reach the level to competete with potter series. HOGWARTS ROCKS....

Don't get me wrong: I love the books (with the exception of #5), devoured each in a day's time, and gave a sad sigh when the series ended.  But if you think any Harry Potter book obtains the depth of literature, then, well, you have much deeper waters to look forward to.  Bringing in common social themes is not enough, no new light is shed.  There is no awe or "ah-ha."  This book is just a treat, a fun and mysterious world to escape into, with characters that become like old friends.

One of the best books I've read. It captivates you with the characters so colourfully described and it makes you always wait in temptation. I felt sad when Sirius and lately Dumbledore left but i was happy that Snape turned to be the one i was always expecting to be. The movies are nothing compare to the books. They kill the imagination.

When a book like Harry Potter comes on sale, one expects kids and little teenagers to be lining up to get it. But no! Just because it has magic in the story, doesn't mean that its for kids. Well it kind of was targeted for them, but the story has so much more to offer. It is more of a suspence book than anything else. It will keep you going till the end and maybe if you are anything like me, you will read it over and over again. I loved it and am sure so will you. It is not the Fastest Selling Book in history without a reason. Thanks JK Rowling.

Personally, I think Harry Potter doesn't even need a review except to say how good it is. Everyone knows it's about an orphan boy living with his aunt and uncle, and on his 11th birthday finds out he's a wizard. I would actually love to tell people who haven't read the books and have only seen the movies to get up and buy the books, because the movies are rubbish when compared to the books. Besides, there is depth in the books that isn't really there in the movies. The story is very catchy and JK Rowling's style makes you want to read it again and again, at least that's the case with me! People might think that because it's about magic then it's just a bed time story for little kids, but I think that anyone can read it. I personally know more adults than kids who have read them. I salute JK Rowling for writing the books!

The equivalent of pop music; catchy, appealing, fun, but lacks the depth of the majority of the novels on this list. In short, enjoyable, but not literary- it does not deserve to be on this list. And yes, I've read them.

This is one of the best books i have ever read in my lifetime... Once you start reading this book you wont keep it down... There is some 'magic' in the story...

J.K. Rowling is a highly gifted story teller.  After reading 5 books I started thinking now she can not retain the thrill which so distinguished her first 5 books, but i could not be more wrong!!
The series gets better with the sixth one and reaches a satisfactory conclusion in the final volume.  The character of Severus snape was most heart touching.  He puts himself in greatest danger for dumbledore and the world.  Yet he recieves only scorn from good people during his lifetime.  He proves out to be as big a martyr as dumbledore himself.

Yes you've heard correctly and youve heard wrong. What am I talking about? The depth of these novels. Many may say that the novels lack depth and indeed the earlier novels are just entertaining thrilling plots but later novels start to mature with more pressing issues and ideas coming thorugh. Particularly the final novel in which Rowling puts the character of Dumbledore under the microscope and shows the effect of information on the character we came to love and trust. Also racism is served up on the table as Rowling uses wizards and muggles as a satire to show the effects of "half-bloods", "mud-bloods" and "pure-bloods". But these books arent known for their thought provoking themes, no, the magic and lovable characters are all as good as you've heard with characters that you'll hate, love, mourn and laugh with. All in all you may have heard that these novels are just literary pop corn but that is all you'll see if you just scan the surface. These books have more literary merits than most would think, they're just waiting to be discovered.
