Honestly and truely these were the first books i fell in love with. Before Harry Potter i didnt like to read...i would glance at a book like once a year..maybe. After finally giving in and reading the series my mind has opened to so much wonder to the world..to the nature of human beings, the current of good vs. evil, the magic that can come from a single book. I went from not thinking about books at all to reading nonstop... now reading to me is like breathing..it's a necessity. I started reading the series when i was seventeen and now five years later I've read more books than i could ever have imagined. It opened my mind to not only science fiction but to Shakespeare, Austen, Bronte, Tolkein,  Lee, Fitzgerald, even Nabokov. So many Authors willing to let you into their head and their thinking. So many worlds have opened their arms and embraced me but nothing compares to the magic and wonder the Harry Potter series have. If not for Rowling i may never have found that. I strongly recommend this series to people of all ages.

I completely disagree that its a book meant only for children.Harry potter series in one of the fantastic story i have ever read. All scenes and characters are plotted so well and perfectly. While reading the book you can actually imagine yourself watching the scene instead of just reading it. Especially the last two books of the series are simply superb. Before reading it i could have never imagined that such an awsome world may exist, with a number of different creatures having different rules and assumptions.I am a Harry Potter fan and loves all its books and movies.I never get bored reading it.
Although,it involves magic but one can learn alot from it if he/she really wants to.Above all aspects, this series enterains you perfectly.I must say J.K Rowling has done a very good job

Anyone who says this series has no merit obviously doesn't have the mental capabilities to look beneath the surface of a story. Just because children love these stories doesn't mean it doesn't have very adult themes. I am a college student and have written three papers on the different themes and lessons found in these books and I wasn't even able to skim the surface on all that can be found and discussed. You can't just take them at face value. I love many of the books on this list, but even classics listed on here don't have the depth and meaning you can find in the Harry Potter series. Also she didn't just come up with a bunch of crap and throw it on the page to make a children's fantasy story. There is a lot of mythology that she obviously thoroughly researched and also wonderful things she came up with on her own that I haven't seen any other author come close to matching in quite some time, if rarely at all.

i have read some of the books but i found them quite childish, without any sense. even this is not worth to be childish, the best and the most important part of being a child book is that the book should teach a lesson while intertaining. im afraid that this series gives no lesson to the chidren whatsoever----a complete waste of the time to read it.

second and more imprtant thing for being a child book is that the book should indulge bravery in the children. when i read the book i felt myself small against the great harry who has magical powers and all. i felt that i am nothing to do anything for good, only harry could do that as he has the powers. unlike when you read the characters like frodo of the lord of the rings you feel yourself uplifted than that character. you feel that if such a small person who has no powers and is weak, if he can change his world, why cant i. this should be the feeling that a novel should induce in the children which the harry potter series has failed to do

thirdly and lastly i would say that rowling has just added things like trolls and goblins and others, trying to be like LOTR but sometimes there was no need or logic of that thing in there. she has just added the things to make it look more interesting no matter it fits in the plot or not, looks logical or not.

the good thing is that the book does has great magic things like potions and broomsticks and wands and moving pictures and other magical things though that were inroduced much earlier but she has taken them to mastery that can take you to the world of magic condition is that you to just close your eyes and enjoy rhe ride not thinking about the plot

Ok to the people that are saying that this doesnt deserve to be on a top 100 list, I couldnt disagree more. I love these books and surprise, surprise theyre actually readable (Unlike so many of the books on this list). I think books that people actually enjoy, should be on the best novels of all time list. And to you, who must be an 11th grade English lit teacher. Go read Moby Dick and have a blast with your Masterpiece. But as for me, I am going to read things that are great. I think the Harry Potter series is amazing. This series got an entire generation of children to start reading and I guarantee that there is no way 1984 could ever do that. I read this entire series when I was pregnant with my first child. The entire way through I could not stop thinking about how great it will be when my child is old enough so that we can read these books together. I love Harry Potter. This series is ranked way to low at 16 it should be number one. Take that 1984.

So the Harry Potter series by J.K Rowling placed number 16 on the top 100 best novels of all time list....why? like all of you i read and loved all the books, fell in love with the characters and places, was almost as if i knew them personaly but the fact is this series of book most certainly does not belong on the top 100 list. As someone before me posted they are a treat, "mind candy" if you would. In my opinion, which in reality holds no real value except to myself, for a book to be on the top 100 list has to have meaning, a theme in the most basic sense if you will, it thas to make you think. These books are really really good if youk are looking for something to escape into but the fact is folks, there is many many other books with way higher value than Harry Potter sorry to say. And as a side note i noticed there was only one novel of stephen kings on here....pretty sad. if there is one series that deserves to be on here more than the Harry Potter series its the dark tower saga. If any of you so called novel experts claim to be what you are than go and read that series than tell me that Harry Potter still deserves to be on there. sorry if i offended any of you Hogwarts lovers agian just my opinion.

These books are definitely amongst the best children's books. Amongst the best contemporary books. But amongst the best books of all time? I'm not so sure.

They, like the works of Dan Brown, have a compulsive readability about them. But they have the intelligence and literary depth of a mackerel in custard (or that analogy, for that matter). Compared with other fantasy works, it has none of the raw creativity of Lord of the Rings, none of the character development and philosophy of the Earthsea Quartet, and none of the subtle layers of meaning of the Chronicles of Narnia and His Dark Materials.

So, all in all, as books they are brilliant. They will be timeless. But there are other books that should get so much more appraise than this series, for example the Series of Unfortunate Adventures by Lemony Snicket, a books series written around the same time for the same audience, with such wit, brilliance and intelligence it pains me to see that it isn't on this list but Harry Potter and the Da Vinci Code are

These books are the best books i have read so far, particularly the seventh one which is amazing. I read these books again and again and also like to watch their movies.

They are not just meant for the children but also for adults and as far as the depth is concerned they have enough of every kind but the most important thing is that you will enjoy the books and feel sad for the fact that there won't be any HP 8 in the near future. They should have been ranked higher. Thanks J.K Rowling, You are the Best.

I read and loved all the books. Jk Rowling does an amazing job on making the characters seem so real and the places too. This series is the only books I've read start to finish multiple times without geting bored. These books do have depth, I think they have more depth then some. Rowling makes it so you love the characters, good or bad, and when some die you may be sad or happy. These books made me laugh and cry. If you have just seen the movies then you have not even seen the tip of the story. You really really have to read these books they ROCK!

JK Rowling may not be an expert writer in a grammatical sense, but she is a master storyteller. She effectively managed to get a world of kids reading and for that alone she deserves to be on this list.

Hmmm... writing a review for these novels by Rowling fascinates me very much, but i'll make one point clear to the guys who criticise the books, first. Literature, customs, culture and tradition, civilization, etc are words used in relative sense. You cant call a book low standard one just because its very interesting and lovable to all. Its wrong to feel that only BOOKS WITH A SHOWOFF AS IF THEY ARE GREAT are the ones to be rewarded. The issue is as simple as it is. Books are for us, not for something supernatural, which juges their depths.

I know that any guy with simple wits can easily declare that he/she loves the books very much, thats something which decides where the series should be placed. I feel sad to say that there are some books in this list which deserve the place, most of them aren't really great enough. I myself read 16 books in the top 20 list, which dont even reach the level to competete with potter series. HOGWARTS ROCKS....

Don't get me wrong: I love the books (with the exception of #5), devoured each in a day's time, and gave a sad sigh when the series ended.  But if you think any Harry Potter book obtains the depth of literature, then, well, you have much deeper waters to look forward to.  Bringing in common social themes is not enough, no new light is shed.  There is no awe or "ah-ha."  This book is just a treat, a fun and mysterious world to escape into, with characters that become like old friends.

One of the best books I've read. It captivates you with the characters so colourfully described and it makes you always wait in temptation. I felt sad when Sirius and lately Dumbledore left but i was happy that Snape turned to be the one i was always expecting to be. The movies are nothing compare to the books. They kill the imagination.

When a book like Harry Potter comes on sale, one expects kids and little teenagers to be lining up to get it. But no! Just because it has magic in the story, doesn't mean that its for kids. Well it kind of was targeted for them, but the story has so much more to offer. It is more of a suspence book than anything else. It will keep you going till the end and maybe if you are anything like me, you will read it over and over again. I loved it and am sure so will you. It is not the Fastest Selling Book in history without a reason. Thanks JK Rowling.

Personally, I think Harry Potter doesn't even need a review except to say how good it is. Everyone knows it's about an orphan boy living with his aunt and uncle, and on his 11th birthday finds out he's a wizard. I would actually love to tell people who haven't read the books and have only seen the movies to get up and buy the books, because the movies are rubbish when compared to the books. Besides, there is depth in the books that isn't really there in the movies. The story is very catchy and JK Rowling's style makes you want to read it again and again, at least that's the case with me! People might think that because it's about magic then it's just a bed time story for little kids, but I think that anyone can read it. I personally know more adults than kids who have read them. I salute JK Rowling for writing the books!

The equivalent of pop music; catchy, appealing, fun, but lacks the depth of the majority of the novels on this list. In short, enjoyable, but not literary- it does not deserve to be on this list. And yes, I've read them.

J.K. Rowling is a highly gifted story teller.  After reading 5 books I started thinking now she can not retain the thrill which so distinguished her first 5 books, but i could not be more wrong!!
The series gets better with the sixth one and reaches a satisfactory conclusion in the final volume.  The character of Severus snape was most heart touching.  He puts himself in greatest danger for dumbledore and the world.  Yet he recieves only scorn from good people during his lifetime.  He proves out to be as big a martyr as dumbledore himself.

Yes you've heard correctly and youve heard wrong. What am I talking about? The depth of these novels. Many may say that the novels lack depth and indeed the earlier novels are just entertaining thrilling plots but later novels start to mature with more pressing issues and ideas coming thorugh. Particularly the final novel in which Rowling puts the character of Dumbledore under the microscope and shows the effect of information on the character we came to love and trust. Also racism is served up on the table as Rowling uses wizards and muggles as a satire to show the effects of "half-bloods", "mud-bloods" and "pure-bloods". But these books arent known for their thought provoking themes, no, the magic and lovable characters are all as good as you've heard with characters that you'll hate, love, mourn and laugh with. All in all you may have heard that these novels are just literary pop corn but that is all you'll see if you just scan the surface. These books have more literary merits than most would think, they're just waiting to be discovered.
