Good read. I love the story. I am not a fan of some of those old English books so I was a bit weary about reading this, but it turns out that I really liked this one. I would recommend it for a nice easy read.

It was first offered to me by a shopkeeper as the most read novel by teenagers. I've read this novel 4 times and the more I read, the more I wanted to read it again though I'm not a teenager any more at the moment. To admit, the love between Jane and Rochester was unbelieveble but it let me forget everything else except them.the whole scenes were fantastically and accurately described and you could understand the heroine deeply.

A simple story beautifully rendered with outstanding sensitivity. The only criticism I would venture to make was that the conflagration scene was somewhat fanciful and lacked credibility, but overall, a terrific read which expemplifies the literary novel.

I have to agree with Justine's review below.  This is one of the most tedious books I have ever read.  While the character of Jane is fully realized and dynamic, the course of the novel itself is rather less believable.  The story may be about Jane's personal attempt to subvert a patriarchal society dominated by a class structure, but the ending undermines this completely.  Instead of Jane's deep-seated morality bringing her to the life she has desired, it is instead circumstance that brings Rochester (a contemptible and pathetic excuse for a human being) down to her level.

I spent years avoiding reading this book because I thought it was a drag. But last year, my sister was studying a simplified version, and I love reading so I started reading it one day while we were waiting for our dentist appointment. I loved it and the next day I went out and bought the original. I absolutley love it and I would reccomend it to anyone. Yes, the begining is a bit slow but it soon picks up speed and you can't help but fall in love with Jane. I reccomend this book to anyone.

I've heard people talk about how depressing and horrible this novel is so I stayed away from it. I'd also seen an old movie adaptation of this and thought it was horrible! Then i decided to read - i found Mr Rochester to be fantastically dashing and funny as well as tortured. Jane was not a 'plain Jane' but self-assured despite her issues. What can i say (I'm no Roger Ebert) - I loved it!

We were offered a choice of four novels to study in English class. Knowing that Jane Eyre is referred to as a classic and one of the "top one hundred books of all time" I decided to read it. Most call the beginning slow, but I found the beginning to be the most interesting one hundred pages of this tedious book. The formation of Jane's character was interesting. What she did with said character, was not. I had no trouble with the language as I have read many Victorian novels, what I found boring was Bronte's writing style. She would take alomost twenty pages to say what I could have said in one sentence. And she would break the flow of a scene to address the audience (eg. "Dear reader, you've probably surmised that I was upset"). It ruined passages in the novel that could have been considered decent. I did not find the love of Jane and Mr. Rochester to be believable. Quite the opposite in fact. Their tender feelings seemed forced. As if Bronte created two uncompatible characters and tried to fake her way through a romance. There was no passagte which made my heart flutter. It is true that Charlotte Bronte is recognized for being the first to write about a heroine as plain as the average woman, and for that brava. But while I can recognize her accoplishment for woman, I can not call this dreary novel a classic.
