After reading this very long and detailed
novel, I came away awed at the impressive prose of the author, George Eliot. She (yes, George is a
woman) writes circles around most english-speaking writers. The book was rich in detail and contained
some incredibly interesting characters. The story details the people of a typical english provential
town in the 1830's and how their lives intersect and how their decisions, both good, bad, in the past and in
the present, impact their lives and those around them. The strength of the book is in the characters
and Eliot's strong writing skills bring them to life vividly. The unemotional, detached, yet highly
intelligent and well-read character of Mr. Casaubon was especially interesting. I'm glad to see
"Middlemarch" included on the list of top novels.
