I can't help but notice that there are many
reviewers who say that the language is what makes this book unbearable, boring, etc. If that's the case
then don't bother reading it -- you have obviously been too much immersed in today's slang to understand
words like "thither, mischance, felicity" (to quote You've Got Mail). But just because you are too stupid to
be able to comprehend the language doesn't give you the right to criticize this literary masterpiece.
Not only is it a wonderful love story, it is humorous, witty, vibrant, and full satire about life in Austen's
time period. Most people who have studied this novel wil argue that it has great significance to
society even today. I imagine that many of you who hated Pride and Prejudice are also the ones who
voted for the Twilight Saga to appear on this list, and for that all I can say is you have no business
putting your input on this site.

Having read the reviews here, I feel I need to
defend Pride and Prejudice's placement near the top of the great novels, where I do believe it belongs.
I believe it was Virginia Woolf who said that Jane Austen is a novelist who it is extremely difficult to "catch
being great." And the fact that she is great without any big flash or dramatic "bigness" is exactly what
makes her writing so amazing.
Hidden beneath the surface of her words is a
wonderful critique of society, of human beings, of our ability to decieve ourselves.
And she does a great deal of it in entertaining
dialogue.
One of the books great pleasures for me is her
dialogue. And how she makes each character so vividly alive by the way they speak. Read a speech
by Darcy and then one by Bingley and you could never mistake one for the other. Read something by Mr.
Collins or by Mrs. Bennet and you will be able to know which of them is speaking by the way they speak and
the things they say. Austen reveals the characters and pokes fun at their self-deception through the
dialogue.
The book is a delightful romance, but it is
more. You can read it if you want just to see love triumph over money and class. But you can also
read it for much comment on human nature and the way society belittles those who do not have the money and
power to "buy" respect.
Read the book -- read it for pleasure, read it
for biting criticism of the world, read it for vivid comic characters. Read it for all of these or for
any reason you like.
Just READ IT.

This would definitely be one of my "Desert
Island" books. Not sure how she does it, but each time I read Austen's book I find myself wondering if
Darcy and Elizabeth will actually come together this time. Love the witty and clean writing and the
characterizations. I came to this novel late in life, but have read it multiple times over the past few
years, enjoying it even more on successive reads.

I found the first half of Pride and Prejudice a
bit slow and boring. The only part I really enjoyed was the last few chapters, when Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth
are obviously going to get married.
I think this book is a bit
overrated.

I remember having to painstakingly finish this
book in High School as it was required reading. An absoulute bore feast that spoke little to me...then I read
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies which was still a bitter pill-but much easier to digest. The satire and pun
are a much needed repreive from the usual boredom and drivel that saturates this monstrosity. Yet this book
is hailed a classic. A classic by whom... If you want to waist three to fours hours of your life then read
away.

After reading some of the less enthusiastic
reviews, I would say that I can see their point--mainly of the slow nature of the first portion. However, it
sets the stage for such a great and romantic story. So I would make the unorthodox recommendation of watching
the movie first(Kiera Knightly version). If you like the movie, you will love the book, and knowing where it
is heading will help you get through some of the language, etc.

Have read the book three times and have watched
the movie perhaps hundred times. One of the best novels without any doubt.

Pride and Prejudice... it's WAY
overrated. It's certainly not bad at all! If it was, people wouldn't still be reading it. It just
wasn't as great as people might say. All in all, it's not fantastic. But it's not horrible
either.

If you are romantic at heart then this is the
place where you should stop and enjoy...the TV adaptation of the book is also amazing. The character of
both Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth has been remarkably potrayed by Colin firth and Jennifer in 1995 version. I
would say both the book and the TV show are must to be watched or read.

Honestly not a big fan of this book, the first
half of this book is slow and tedious, you can only take the annoying old english conversation for so long.
With that being said, yes i know this is a satire and it does a pretty good of replicating how rediculous the
vicotrian era was but its is extremely repetitive. The second half of the book is much better and I really
enjoyed reading it. PS Mr Bennet is a great character, definatly a plus from Jane Austen.

This summer I decided to read all the classic
"romance" novels and Pride and Prejudice was number one on my list to read...
I'd heard so much about it and so many people
kept reiterating how "amazing" it was...
I honestly didnt fall in love with it...but I
didnt hate it....
The first 60 pages or so were literally
agonizing to read.(for me in my opinion)..but graduallly it caught my interest...
I think I wanted more insight into Mr. Darcy
and Elizabeth one on one together...I think that is why I kept turning the page ..hoping for some beautiful
dialogue between the two...but it never really hit a home run in that area for me...
Now, I will say the last 30 pages or so I was
really into it and some of the things Mr. Darcy says to Elizabeth were what I was expecting...but I just
assumed there would be more to this love than what I read...
I was honeslty more intrigued by Jane
(Elizabeth's sister) and Mr. Bingley (for the most part) more than the main characters...
So, I am not jumping out of my seat for this
novel but Jane Austen is an amazing author just the way she desrcibes things keeps you wanting to turn the
page but for the "epic" love match between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy I am not sure if I am completely sold on
that ...
But I full heartedly understand the basis of
this novel and the name suits it perfectly. With Pride and Prejudice aside true love will always prevail and
thats how I percieve the tiitles meaning.

Well I absolutely love this book, Austen is
incredible in her narrative aspect of life between the sexes. But I feel i have to stand up for Mr.Darcy..so
many people dislike him for his misunderstandings towards Lizzy and actually wanted her with Wickham which is
absurd. To me the point of the novel, especially for Darcy and Elizabeth, is realizing how peoples
pride and prejudices can overtake them, can change them into something that they themselves cannot see. But
falling for eachother, even stubbornly, opens their eyes to the way they think of people and the way people
think of them.

Not a fan. I know almost every other girl I
talk to says it's the best book ever, but I can not stand any of the characters. All of the girls are so
catty and just stupid. I did not care what happend to anyone in the stoy. I know everyone is so sad about the
end, but I think the guy she was "supposed" to end up with was a big player and I am happy for her that she
didn't end up with him.

The first time I heard about "Pride and
prejudice" I thought it was a modern, plain novel. The movie with Keira Knightley is one of my favorites. The
most interesting quality of "Pride and prejudice" is that even if the first time you read it you are
bewitched, especially by its ability of being bitter-sweet ironic and hiding a love story beyond stereotype
ideeas of novel romance, as much as you`ll continue riding it, you will feel nothing else that it`s close to
your heart and to everything one can desire from a book. Only in this novel it didn`t bother me the ideea of
not having an ideea about the end . Also, I was fascinated by the language, wich of course it was an
essential feature of the time. Jane Austen is a genious of literature. Definitely a must read and a must
watch!!

I was bit disappointed in the way the story
turned out. There were, according to me, no 'real' conflicts in the plot. Some of the characters were one
dimensional, and almost all of them too materialistic for my taste. The heroine 'Elizabeth' has many shades
and is realistic, where as, her reticent hero lacks charm. He's definitely no match.

At first i didnt want to read pride and
prejudice having already seen the film, but as i started reading it i found it was 100 times better and that
i could not put it down. Austens novels portray the fact that witty and intelligent women can get the rich
men dispite their low status and bad conexions. I absolutley Love Love Love this book and recomend it ( and
all the other Jane Austen novels ) to everyone that enjoys reading.

Well I'm obviously in a minority of one here,
but I thought the book was simply dreadful. I couldn't go on after about page 50 and will never read anything
by this author ever again. It was just complete garbage in my opinion.

I refused to read this book in high school
because I thought it was a silly soap opera that was not worth my time. Having recently gone back and
read it cover to cover, I couldn't have been more wrong. Austin does an incredible job of weaving humor
and sarcasm into a witty tale of 18th century high society in England and the woes of young women searching
for a balance between finding true love and maintaining a good appearance.

I was never a big fan of classics because I
thought they were long and boring. I have to admit that the first time I was attracted to reading Pride
and Prejudice was when I was watching 'You've Got Mail' (for the 100th time) and Meg Ryan's character
says she loves that book. A while later I found it in my high school library so I decided to borrow it. I
loved it and I kept the book for 3 weeks instead of one!! It is now my favorite book of all
time.

The name of the book could not be more
suitable. Jane Austen writes so well that she doesn't require dramatic events to make her novel
interesting. The story is more or less predictable but still you read the book through.

This is a must read! The sarcasm and
humour are put to use with dramatic language. Jane Austen is a masterful writer. I couldn't put
this book down! The characters are vividly described and the atmosphere is tangible. Escape to a
world long gone with flowing gowns, gentleman callers and emotion run amuck!
