Hardy is
worthless??? I can't let a sweeping statement like that
pass unremarked!
It's true
that 'Tess' was not one of Hardy's best efforts. It's the
tragedy of all tragedies and pretty tough going to
complete. Jude the Obscure wan't great, either. But Far
From the Madding Crowd and the inestimable literary
heights scaled in the Mayor of Casterbridge mean that
Hardy cannot be written off so easily. Like you I don't
know what this particular book is doing in the list when
so many better others of his are absent, but that's the
judgement of the majority, I guess and we have to accept
it.

Thomas
Hardy is worthless. If you do have to read a Hardy
book (and the Hardy boys is not an option lol) this is
the one to read. I had to read several of them
(this, Jude, ect..) for a class I took and I considered
dropping out of college to avoid reading another book by
Thomas Hardy. Shame on everyone who voted for
this.
