THHGTG Definitely ranks within the top 100 of all time....When I first read it back in the 80's, I thought it was marvelously refreshing (how many Star Trek flicks had been released by the time of the book's debut...?!?!?) and a great send-up of science fiction....I am older now, and I still love the series, but on a deeper level...Adams pokes very gentle fun at the human condition (my all-time faves are the SEP (Somebody Else's Problem) and the Joo-Janta 2000 sunglasses (for what you can't see can't hurt you) and actually has you thinking about "the ultimate question" and could it really be 6 x 7? When I first read that, I was floored! I think this series will stand the test of time because the themes are broad and the characters are memorable and, well, a bit like us...

This is the first in the increasingly inaccurately named Hitchhikers Guide (a quote referred to his fifth book Mostly Harmless).

This book is absolutely hilarious. If you dont laugh at while reading this book, in my opinion, you have no soul. I have literally read this book and the other five at least twice, some of them, three times. As far as what I would call good books this ranks up there with East of Eden (Steinbeck), Grapes of Wrath (Steinbeck), The Catcher in the Rye (Salinger), and all three Lord of the Rings (Tolkien).

You dont need to appreciate British humor to enjoy this book, just have an open mind to all things impossible (or improbable). The story line supports the quality of the book, and leaves room and for free flowing sequels, but doesnt leave the reader hanging at the end. None of the books leave the reading hanging at the end. However, like most if not all sequels, you cant pick up in the middle of the series and understand what is going on. And the worst, you wont get all of the humor.

To be honest, I didn't laugh once in this novel. Not once. I actually laughed more in the Artemis Fowl books and even in Harry Potter. Maybe I just don't get British humour or something.

This series (and the first two books from it in particular) rank alongside the funniest I have ever come across in English literature. Adams is not only highly imaginitive and screamingly humourous, but was also a great writer. An outstanding humourist at his best.

This book inspired me to become writer. (Yes, I realize the irony of my brevity).

A really good book. Funny, but very intelligent. Takes some skill to breathe humour into a statistical description of life, the universe and everything...
