The Road
by Cormac McCarthy
Review of The Road by Cormac McCarthy

This book is disturbing. I was depressed
the whole time I was reading it,and for several days thereafter. I suffer from mild depression and this
book triggered an episode. I suggest caution if you are deeply effected by graphically described scenes
of desperation.

I read The Road in a small group as a part of a
college class. Nobody else in my group liked it. It took me a while to decide how I felt about the book. The
prose is rather bare, and the plot is almost nonexistant, but there are some incredible truths to learn
here.
The book centers around a father and his young
child who are trying to survive after an undescribed apocalyptic event. The land is absolutley barren, and
other people are becoming hostile in an attempt to survive. The small family is trying to reach the sea,
hoping to find means for survival.
While there wasn't a whole lot of action
through the majority of the book, some parts were truly gripping and even quite disturbing. This book was very
different than almost anything I had read before, but in the end it was a great read, touching on topics such
as what it means to be human, and keeping up hope in almost hopeless circumstances.
If you are interested I would say give it a
try. I'm glad I did.
