The Stand
by Stephen King
Review of The Stand by Stephen King

With novels such as Midnight's Children and The
heart is a Lonely Hunter omitted from the list, it is hard to justify having a light-weight such as The Stand
or A Prayer for Owen Meany.

This book was sooooo long, I loved the
beginning, liked the middle, got bored at the end. Still a great book but sooooo long : ).

This is my all time favorite. It is well worth
the time and effort it takes to read. This is the longest book i have ever read, but it is also the largest
in scope. The story is a huge sprawling epic that takes the reader to the end off the world and far beyond
into modern society's worst nightmares. The characters are easy to relate to, as they are every day american
people forced into extraordinary circumstances. There is surely a plot element for everyone, as this is a
genre-less book if i have ever read one. I highly recommend this one to anyone who likes to read at
all.

The Stand is an apocalyptic epic which brings
out the best in Steven King. His character development is pure and propels the novel to a sweeping
conclusion. Good prevails over evil but a what price? How much sacrafice is required? The
novel has to be long because we have to arrive at the end of the world with these people, suffer their
losses, feel their determination, watch them change and root for them to reaffirm what is good about all of
us. No one better creates a world, or destroys one, better than King, who is at his best confronting
what we cannot explain with fully develop, conflicted people. I find this book to be among the best
reads. It is a book that will live in you long after you put it down. Who cares how long a book
is when you can't put it down? It is also good to see King get recognized for his talent even though I
beleive the Dark Tower will be his lasting literary legacy.

This book is probably a lot longer than in
needs to be. I also thought we were going to get a nice dark ending, but in the end everything seems to
work out. Hooray!!! If you have a lot of time on your hands and like books that you can get into
for several months and really get used to the characters and what not than I would say give the stand a
try. To me it felt a bit like a teenagers book that went on for far too long. Not at all scary in
my opinion. One thumb up, one down.
