Who else
should sing Dust in the Wind but the band named after the dust bowl, Kansas. The song was a major hit for the
band that has been heard in TV adds, movies, radio commercials, you name it. Very odd for a popular song, its
lyrics profess a melancholy and pessimistic outlook on life, which is nonetheless a rational one. The song is
sung in a haunting, wistful tone in keeping with the lyrics. "All we are is dust in the wind" refers to how
fleeting a moment are our lives and everyihing in them. We may rant, rave, love, cry and laugh, but it is all
in the end, a temporary state of being. As Will Shakespeare would say, life is a tale told by an idiot
signifying nothing. Right on Will and Kansas. You have to agree, though, that this is a very unusual
theme for a blockbuster popular hit song.
