A wonderful
melancholy, almost gospel song by The Animals, "The House of the Rising Sun" is a sad tale of a brothel in New
Orleans. There aren't a lot of popular song hits about houses of ill repute, that is usuallyreserved for the
blues genre. The song works very well as a pop hit possibly because of the sermon like vocals and dirge-like
background music that set this apart from your usual pop fare. Interestingly "The House of the Rising Sun"
tells about the ruination of the young lads that visit the "ladies of the night" and not about the ruination of the
ladies themselves. Again, a different take on the ho house theme. A mournful haunting tune by a fine
bunch of musicians. The song itself is an old American folk song, so no one really knows who wrote it.
I wish I did.
