The song,
written by Kris Kristoferson and sung by both Janis Joplin and Willie Nelson to perfection has a unique place in
popular music due to its almost nostalgic look at people who don't fit into the mainstream of whatever human
society they happen to be in. The song eloquently tells the tale of a couple of transients seeking some
kind of place to settle down and call home. You get a feeling that they never will. These people
parted company in Salinas after traveling all the way from the south, generally in the back of undoubtedly several
trucks, still searching for a place to remain for at ieast a while. They are lonely people and the song
suggests they always will be.
