The Great Wall of China

100 Greatest Architectural Works

The Great Wall of China while crumbling now in most areas has understandably been named one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.  It was originally built in the 5th century and has been repaired throughout many times during  its long history.  It was built to hold back a series of China's enemies throughout the centuries.  Now it is a fascinating sight from afar and an excitement to walk on.  It is absolutely mind-boggling to walk along a monument that you first heard about in grade school and here you are!  On top of this rambling beast, climbing up the grossly uneven steps of the Great Wall of China!  It is a major feat to walk on due to the uneven heights of the steps, which puts you more in awe of the millions of Chinese soldiers who so bravely guarded their country through the centuries, not to mention the number of lives lost building the massive, lengthy structure.
