The Last Supper
by Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo Da
Vinci's painting "The Last Supper" is one of world's best known works of art. It has given itself to diverse
interpretations. One might think this odd given it is clearly a depiction of Christ and his disciples dining
rather sumptuouisly together before Jesus is crucified by the Romans who feared his influence. Jesus also
gathered the disciples to tell them that one of them would betray him. The painting reveals the reaction
shown on each of the men's faces as they take that thought in. There has been a lot of controversey
over the identitly of one of the so called disciples. Some believe that the apostle John is actually Mary
Magdalene, a prostitute Jesus befriended. There is also an interpretation that the painting is grouped into
threes, three apostles here, three there and so on representing the Chrisitian Holy Trinity. Whether you take
this large and magnicifent painting at face value or read things into it that makes sense to you, it is another one
of Leonardo Da Vinci's masterpieces. The painting hangs in, appropriately enough, the dining hall of the
Santa Maria Delle Grazie monastery in Milan, Italy.
