The Scream
by Edvard Munch

I am scared
of "The Scream". I truly am. When I look at the painting, I try to think about what this thing
could be screaming at/for. The other people on the bridge are just as terrifying to look at. I often
feel like the other people are doing something (some sort of disgusting act) that is causing the thing in the
foreground to scream. I am sure that Munch's intentions were to evoke fear when you looked at the piece, and
he was very successful in doing so. When I look at the piece, I initially enjoy it--the colors are warm and
the placement of the color is inviting; however, when you really look at the piece, the emotional part kicks
in. I start to think that this person in the foreground is morphing in some horrible way. It is like he
has been stripped of all of his humanity and all that is left is a scream. Honestly, just thinking about the
painting gives me the creeps. So, the question remains, do I love this painting or do I hate it? I am
still unsure.
